The Joint Action Committee has directed the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Associated Institutions and National Association of Academic Technologists to resume strike on Monday.<br />
<br />
It was learnt that the reason for the strike is dissatisfaction over the sharing of the 2 Billion Naira from the government.<br />
<br />
JAC claimed that a very small amount of the money was given to SSANU, NASU and NAAT while the lion share of the money was given to the Academic Staff Union of Universities adding that the government failed to explain how the N23bn was shared between ASUU and the non-academic teaching staff unions.<br />
<br />
JAC had earlier sent a letter to the Federal Government asking that the criteria for the allocation be explained. The time given for the FG to respond has elapsed and yet no response.<br />
<br />
<br />
In view of this, the union has directed all its members to resume indefinite strike action as from 12 midnight, Sunday, December 3, 2017. During this period, the strike shall be total and comprehensive.<br />

The ASUU President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, who made the announcement, explained that the suspension was conditional, as it depends on whether the Federal Government would fulfill its parts of the agreements.<br />
The union directed university lecturers to resume duty from tomorrow, Tuesday.<br />
<br />
At the meeting, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the federal government delegation led by the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige.<br />
<br />
Mr. Ngige had earlier said both parties produced “collective agreement of action” after the meeting.

<span style="font-family: inherit;">According to him, plans are on ground to honour the agreement between the FG and ASUU.<br /><br />He stated that the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, had already approved a total N53bn for the union so far, adding that the balance of N23bn would be released on Monday when the striking lecturers would receive the cheque.<br /><br />He however said, “We didn’t agree with ASUU on their request that TSA should be taken out. I told them that it is not possible because it is a new policy and government is not going to change it for anyone.<br /><br />“Concerning their salary short fall, we said the reason springs from universities employing people without proper authority.<br /><br />“For instance, a university can just decide to go and recruit 50 people without notifying IPPIS. So, what they are going to get is the money they got last month, which will not be sufficient for them. We have told them that institutions should, henceforth, stop doing that and they accepted.<br /><br />The Minister finally Said that he is optimistic that the strike will be called of within then next one week maximum.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">It was gathered that the government admitted wrongdoing and appealed to the lecturers to call off the strike immediately, but the appeal was rejected by ASUU leaders, who pleaded for time to meet their members because of the TSA.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;">The Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige stated after the meeting that the government was expecting feedback from ASUU on the overtures made to it, adding that the union promised to return to the negotiation table within one week with hope of finally calling of the strike.</span> </span>
